Why Nordic EV Charging Giant Joulia Chose eMabler
When Aneo Mobility and Elaway came together in January 2026, they brought two established EV charging businesses into one company. The new business, Joulia, inherited two networks, two technology setups, and two different charging platforms.
While Aneo Mobility had already been running its charging operations on eMabler since 2022, Elaway had built its network on another platform. The merger gave Joulia the opportunity to look at both platforms with fresh eyes and decide which one could provide the foundation for both the company it wanted to build and the scale it had inherited on day one.
"We ran a long due diligence process to work out what we needed to make the new business work. We also had a clear goal in mind: to build something modular and flexible that supports the future of the company." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
Joulia operates around 70,000 charge points across Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, serving more than 2,000 housing companies and businesses.
After a long due diligence process, they chose eMabler.
99% Success Rate Proven at Scale
The decision to go with eMabler started with something Joulia could measure from experience.
During its years on eMabler, Aneo Mobility grew 138% year on year, giving Joulia direct evidence of how the EV charging platform performs as a commercial network scales.
"We agreed on picking the best of breed and having expert systems doing expert jobs." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
That track record gave eMabler a different kind of credibility. Joulia did not have to rely on demonstrations, product roadmaps or promises about what the platform might support in the future. Instead, it could judge eMabler on real operational results from a large charging business.
The operational results are measured where it matters most to EV drivers, with one key metric being the charging success rate, which tracks the share of charging sessions that actually complete, rather than whether the infrastructure was operational (another metric known as uptime). Aneo Mobility won the eMabler Award 2025 for Most Reliable EV Charging Operator after scoring a consistent 98-99% success rate, and Joulia’s merged network has kept that rate as the standard for its operations.
"eMabler communicates with the chargers, has auto-healing capabilities, and just makes it work." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
That existing history with eMabler gave Joulia confidence in the charging foundation, the next question was what should sit around it.
API-first Charging that Fits the Existing Stack
The merger meant Joulia was not simply choosing a platform for today’s network, but it was also deciding how the technology behind the new company should work as the business developed.
Like many other operators, Joulia’s goal was to build its technology stack around its own needs, rather than having the charging platform determine how the rest of the business had to operate.
eMabler’s API-first approach gives Joulia a charging core that connects with the systems around it. eMabler handles the charging-specific operations, while the rest of the technology stack stays under Joulia’s control and can be connected, replaced and developed independently of the charging network. This mattered even more because the merger brought together two established businesses, each with its own systems, processes and customer relationships. With a modular charging core, Joulia could decide how to bring those pieces together on its own terms.
White-label Apps Versus Owning the Customer Journey
Joulia develops its own digital products for the people who use and manage its charging services. Joulia Charge serves residents, while MyJoulia is built for the people responsible for the charging infrastructure.
The decision to use eMabler supports more than the operation of the chargers themselves. Through eMabler’s APIs, Joulia connects its charging infrastructure to the digital products its customers already use, so that charging becomes part of that same experience instead of a separate product to download and learn.
"Charging is complicated, but we must make it simple for the end user." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
Beyond simplicity, owning the customer experience lets Joulia decide how residents interact with charging, how housing companies receive information about their infrastructure, and how charging connects with the other services the company develops.
"For us it is all about modularity. Instead of one big one-stop shop, we believe that owning the core, the customer data, and the customer journey is what will differentiate us in the market, and in the long term." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
That ownership becomes even more significant as Joulia expands.
An Open Charging Platform that Evolves with the Business
Joulia now operates across four countries, and the systems that work for the company today will inevitably have to evolve as the business grows. The merger itself demonstrated how quickly a charging business can change: two companies became one and around 45,000 drivers had to be brought onto a single platform and customer journey.
Having been through that once, Joulia wanted the next transition to be easier. With the charging core on eMabler and the surrounding systems connected through APIs, Joulia can swap or upgrade individual parts of its stack without touching the charging infrastructure. That gives the company room to build for the markets it serves today while staying open to new markets and services in the future.
"For us, ‘open’ also means flexibility in choosing the right partners." - Mari Moxnes Karlsen, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Joulia
Conclusion
The merger of Aneo Mobility and Elaway gave the brand-new company, Joulia, an opportunity to step back and reconsider the technology behind its business. eMabler was already familiar to one side of the merger, but Joulia still had to decide whether it was also the right platform for the future.
The company chose eMabler after evaluating what it needed from its technology foundation: a platform that had already operated at commercial scale, an architecture that could connect to the rest of its technology stack, the freedom to own its customer experience, and the flexibility to keep evolving as the business grows.
The result is a single charging core supporting over 70,000 charge points across four countries, while the systems and digital experiences around it remain in Joulia’s hands. For Joulia, that gives the company a common charging core from which it can continue building its own products, systems and services without lock-ins.
And for eMabler, there is something particularly meaningful about the choice. After bringing two businesses and two platforms together, Joulia had the opportunity to choose again, and it chose eMabler.
The next chapter of Joulia’s story is now being built on that decision.
